Sex, truth, and videotape

Multi-media show features candid talk from a spectrum of Clevelanders

by Michelle Tomko

Ever wonder what the boy next door is up to? Well, Cleveland Public Theatre is giving you a chance to find out now through April 2 in their multi-media piece from local writer Christopher Johnston entitled Sexually Explicit Material.

Beginning in 1996, Johnston began to interview queer Clevelanders, as well as mothers, wives, johns and prostitutes, and husbands.

"Everything is well represented." said cast member Nina Angeloff. "I play a stripper, a lesbian, a prostitute, and a molested girl.”

Aside from the live performance, video monitors will display interviews with experts in sexuality produced by Tom Common, director of the theatre's cable TV show. Robert Banks, a Cleveland filmmaker, will also be showing short film excerpts, and

a photography exhibit by Dottie Mae Mann will hang in the lobby.

"The whole atmosphere in the theatre is it's not a show, it's a living room. Like Sex, Lies and Videotape," says Angeloff on the intimacy of the piece. "It's taking it down to an intimate level." she added.

What is the best thing about the show? "The honesty," Angelhoff says. "That's how I am. These people, it's their real words. The challenge is making their words theatrical, but not over the top."

An excerpt from the piece reads, “I remember sitting there with this guy and him just putting a $20 bill on my leg, and it was a whole kind of weird thing. He was obviously really straight, and he just wanted me to jerk off in front of him, and it was so interesting just trying to get into the minds of what these people wanted, what it was about really for them." ♡
